Kicks Café
Fall 2023 (Sep-Dec):
This studio project was a part of a Spatial Experience Design course. The focus of the work was to develop a design plan for a branded café experience, then design the space using 3D modeling and rendering.
This included brand research for the sub-brand CAMPERLAB, color and material analysis, and spatial programming.
Zine Candy
CONCEPT OVERVIEW
Zine Candy is a CAMPERLAB inspired speakeasy candy café, curated through a discovery of experiences.
Combining the sidewalk culture of the Los Angeles Arts District and CAMPERLAB’s anarchic fashion ideals, Zine Candy provides a “candy shop” of magazines and a fantastical candy café.
+ SENSE OF PLACE
The café site is set in the Art’s District of Los Angeles: an area full of culture, art, and re-imagined industrial architecture.
To bring the ideals and identities of the site and CAMPERLAB, Zine Candy incorporates a “seeking discovery” experience.
This wandering invitation uses winding magazine shelves, juxtaposing styles, and an air of playful unpredictability to curate a space perfect for the “pleasure-seekers” and neighborhood patrons.
COLOR AND MATERIALS STRATEGY:
This color palette curates an intriguing and playful candy space. The vibrant and bold pinks, yellows, and blues evoke excitement and interest, while the neutral tones provide depth and balance.
To curate a Flamboyant, Curious, and Authentic environment, materials like dichroic glass, colored plaster composites, velvet, and terrazzo are used.
Similarly, simple materials like brick and neutral woods will be employed to create an authentic balance between the site and the experience.
SPATIAL DIAGRAMMING
To create a multistep “discovery” experience through spatial programming, the space is split into three stages. Each stage strays further from reality progressively.
This allows each space to be independently themed, yet appear cohesive as an environment.
As well, each stage is another step in the experience of the space.

Final renders were made in Twinmotion and touched up in Photoshop.
CAD MODELING + RENDERING
Concept ideation was done through small scale models and sketching, but final concept development was conducted in Rhino.
The building and surrounding block was modeled to scale and “furnished” with premade and selfmade assets.
FINAL INFORMATION
-
All modeling was done in Rhino, then rendered in Twinmotion. Additional effects were added in Photoshop.
-
Additional 1/4 scale physical models were made of the cafe for final presentations. Please contact me for pictures or lasercut diagrams.
-
Additional branding and aesthetic development opportunities were available in the fixtures and assets used for this project. Odd/kitsch forms combined with recognizable furnishings such as the Verner Panton Living Tower were used to convey CAMPERLAB’s “ugly-beautiful” design motto.
